Why I Cherish My Monthly Retreats: A Decade of Reflection
This past week was my monthly retreat. For more than a decade, I’ve been taking the 1st Friday of each month as a retreat day. Over the years, I’ve come to cherish this time. Some of you may have seen my video blog post already sharing a bit. Here’s the link in the event you’d like to see: Retreat Day Reflections.
Taking regular retreats has been a transformative practice in my life, both personally and professionally. In our fast-paced world, filled with endless to-do lists and constant digital noise, carving out time for reflection, rest, and rejuvenation is not just a luxury; it’s a necessity. These retreats offer a sacred pause, a moment to step back from the daily grind and reconnect with what truly matters.
One of the highlights of these retreats has been the profound sense of clarity and purpose that often emerges. Away from the usual distractions, I find space to think deeply, pray, and listen. It’s in these quiet moments that I often receive the most valuable insights and direction for my life and work. Whether it’s a new idea for my business, a fresh perspective on a challenge, or simply a renewed sense of peace, these retreats consistently offer gifts that I carry with me long after they end.
For those interested in a more detailed look at what these retreats can entail, I invite you to read about one particular experience in my post, Join Me and Get Away from All the Distractions. It’s a journey into the importance of stepping away from the hustle and finding solace in solitude. There’s something incredibly liberating about disconnecting from the daily rush and immersing oneself in nature or a quiet space, allowing for a deeper connection with God and oneself.
Another memorable retreat involved a seemingly simple snack that led to a profound realization. In What Do God and Almond Joy Have to Do with One Another?, I share how a small treat during a retreat became a symbol of God’s provision and joy in unexpected places. This story is a testament to the fact that retreats don’t have to be elaborate or perfectly planned; sometimes, the simplest moments can lead to the most meaningful experiences.
For those considering incorporating retreats into their lives, I can’t recommend it enough. Whether it’s a day, a weekend, or even a few hours, taking intentional time away from the busyness of life to rest and reflect can be incredibly beneficial. It’s an opportunity to recalibrate, to listen to the still, small voice within, and to find rest in the presence of God. In a world that constantly demands our attention, these moments of retreat remind us of the importance of being still, of being present, and of being mindful of the greater purpose that guides our lives.
As I continue this practice, I’m continually amazed at how these retreats shape and enrich my journey. They are a vital part of my rhythm, a time to rest, reflect, and reconnect with my core values and beliefs. I encourage you to consider taking your own retreats, however they may look for you. It’s a practice that can bring tremendous peace, clarity, and joy into your life.
