Should I Pray for Financial Blessing Upon My Business?

The Tension of a Faith-Driven Entrepreneur

Business owners who follow Christ often wrestle with a key question: Should I ask God for financial success?

On one hand, we know that God provides abundantly and blesses faithful stewardship. On the other, Jesus warns about the dangers of wealth and how it can lead us away from dependence on Him.

How do we reconcile these truths? How do we approach financial success without it becoming an idol?

The Prayer of Jabez: A Model for Business Owners

In The Prayer of Jabez, Bruce Wilkinson highlights a bold request from a lesser-known biblical figure:

“Oh, that You would bless me indeed, and enlarge my territory, that Your hand would be with me, and that You would keep me from evil, that I may not cause pain!” (1 Chronicles 4:10, NKJV)

Jabez didn’t just pray for blessing—he prayed for impact, responsibility, and protection. His request wasn’t about personal comfort; it was about being entrusted with more so that he could do more for God’s purposes.

The Heart Behind Our Prayers

If our financial prayers are centered on stewardship, generosity, and Kingdom impact, then asking for God’s blessing is not only appropriate—it is necessary.

However, if our prayers are rooted in self-reliance, status, or fear, then we risk turning money into our god rather than trusting in the true Source of provision.

How to Pray for Financial Abundance with the Right Heart

Instead of simply asking God to make our businesses successful, what if we prayed this instead?

“Father, I acknowledge You as my Provider. Bless my business, not for my comfort, but so that I may steward it well, create opportunities for others, and give generously. Let financial blessing be a tool for Your Kingdom, and if abundance is delayed, let me remain faithful and content in Your provision.”

This shifts the focus from getting to giving, from self to stewardship, and from control to surrender.

The Most Important Partnership in Business

Last week, I wrote about how trust is the foundation of great business partnerships. But the most important partnership we have is with God Himself.

If we truly trust Him, we won’t hesitate to ask for what we need. But we will also surrender to His timing, knowing that His provision is always enough—whether in times of plenty or times of testing.

Reflection: What’s Your True Desire?

As you reflect on this, consider:

  • Am I partnering with God in my business, or am I just asking Him to bless my plans?
  • Is my desire for financial blessing about stewardship or self-reliance?
  • Am I fully surrendered, trusting that He will provide exactly what is needed?

Final Thoughts

Financial success is not the goal—faithful stewardship is. If God blesses your business with abundance, use it wisely. If the increase hasn’t come yet, trust that He is still providing exactly what you need.

What are your thoughts on this? How do you approach financial prayers in your business? Let’s continue the conversation in the comments.
